My meanderings about politics, space exploration, cars, cats, tech things and whatever else strikes my fancy. To the current occupant of the White House, we will not be taken into war on anyone's leash.
One of the accomplishments in my life that I am the proudest of is my founding of White Party Week in Miami, first as a fundraiser for Health Crisis Network then for CareResource.
The first White Party took place at Frank Wager’s home in Coral Gables when people were dying around us and we had no idea of what was causing it. It then moved on to Viscaya one of the most beautiful places in Miami. By 1994 Keith Cromley the assistant director of development of htn came to me and said that there was no more room for growth in fundraising at one event in Viscaya. So we worked together to create White Party Week.
Along with 550 volunteers we created an event that was so spectacular that Sky one broadcasting from the UK did a three-hour documentary on how we accomplished it. In my last year as chairman we raised 1.2 million dollars after all expenses. In 1999 that was a lot of money. I resigned from my chairmanship in 2000 with a heavy heart but thought giving it to others to carry on would be the best after having been the chair for five years.
We started off in 1995 with six events and grew to 23 events by the year 2000.
Lark Bennett and Keith Cromley we’re both instrumental has staff members in making sure that this huge event ran like a well-oiled machine. When Lark became the director of development for Care Resource she took it to the next level.
Being on the board of directors of HCN or Health Crisis Network and being the founding chair a white party week are two of the things I am most proud of in my life and I am so grateful that I was able to do so.
Reince priebus the Republican chair said gleefully that Donald Trump would launch his Hispanic Outreach tour as it the first part of the official presidential campaign. So it was announced that Trump would be visiting Miami for a round table. This is a round table that had been scheduled for July 8th, then postponed, then postponed, and then scheduled for next Tuesday. Now the Trump campaign says members of the Round Table will not be available on Tuesday. Perhaps they’re being run out of town. Meanwhile Rachel Maddow today and her show explains where Donald Trump jr. Was while the Democrats were in Philadelphia. He was in Philadelphia Mississippi. And before you think that they did this as some sort of a joke let me explain the history. Philadelphia Mississippi is best known to the country for the brutal murder and burial of three civil rights activists in the sixties. Those involved were part of the community and also part of the police force. So it became a regular stomping ground for segregationist like George Wallace. So it isn’t surprising that’s Trump jr. Would show up and this still all white stronghold in Mississippi. The crowd look like uh graduation from Caucasian University although none of them look like they went to University. Dog whistle politics are the Forte of Donald Trump’s campaign. And once again he shows that he’s the master of getting white supremacist on the bandwagon for his campaign.
Donald Trump has no interest in the Latino vote. He is more interested in getting those who don’t believe in the United States to register to vote for the first time and vote for someone they believe will have their backs as white supremacists. There’s a special place in hell for people like Donald Trump.
Ignoring climate change is criminal. We owe it to our children grandchildren and great-grandchildren to give them an earth that is livable. Politicians like Rubio who deny it are the dying its at their own peril. When I lived on South Beach in 2013 I could not believe that each morning on Lori’s Lee sunny days the streets will be flooded as the water came up through the sewers and drains to make the city impossible to pedestrians. I moved back to Los Angeles and have not looked back once. My move to Miami was a huge error which I am still paying for. The friends I have made in Los Angeles have stuck with me through the good and especially through the bad. Other than a few notable exceptions, and you know who you are, those in Miami who called themselves my friends we’re really never that and acted like rats on a sinking ship when my life started going downwards.
Some, who call themselves my friends actually call themselves my best friends, refused to give me shelter when I had nowhere to go after I was in a nursing home for 5 months. Their excuse was there partner was unable to deal with me being there. And yet each time they have a chance they say “oh you were always have a place in our house. A lie that makes them feel good”. That may seem bitter, but it is the actual truth and the truth is never bitter.
Now I’m back, almost at the top of my game, and I have nothing but blue skies ahead of me. I love Los Angeles and anybody who says anything else about it has me to reckon with. AVB
A good and wise friend of mine said that I needed to explain a little bit more why I am in this predicament. On September 1st 2012 there was the possibility of a hurricane coming to Miami. I went and got water for myself and some of the older residents in the building. I put the water in my apartment and left the door unlocked, forgetting that they had sent home all security and maintenance so they could prepare their homes. Upon returning to my apartment at the Palm Bay Yacht Club and Marina after delivering the water to the elderly people in the building I was surprised to find someone in my apartment he or she immediately knocked me out. I never got a look at him or her. So from September 1st to September 3rd this person or persons electrocuted me on my left wrist and my upper right arm. The only reason I survived was that Florida Power and Light came on Monday to test our emergency generator. This has been scheduled and they shut off the power to the whole building which allowed me to escape. I crawled out into the hallway and the neighbor found me called 911 and I was rushed to Mount Sinai. I was diagnosed with fourth degree electrical burns to my left wrist and my upper right arm. This has been ruled an attempted murder, I was and still am very traumatized by this 68 hour ordeal. And I never pushed the authorities to find the person who did it. it seems that they were on a drug called bath salts. the doctor at the hospital told me they found bath salts in my apartment and I explained that I did not have any because my bathtub did not work. he’s an explain to me that bath salts wère a drug. I stayed in Mount Sinai for 6 weeks and then was transferred to Oceanside Extended Care at 9th and Pennsylvania on South Beach. I stayed there for 5 months. When I was discharged I went through grueling physical therapy in preparation for surgery on June six of two thousand and thirteen, unfortunately I lost my Medicaid coverage on June 1st and was forced to move to Los Angeles from Miami, to get continuing care. I sold my prized bmw M3 convertible for less than a quarter of its rough value and as my friends could atest it was pristine. I moved to California because I could get coverage here and having lived here before I was familiar with the area. I am scheduled for extensive surgery on my left arm and wrist on May 27th. I am facing months of rehab and possibly more surgeries down the road. So there it is the story that I don’t like telling because it brings up terrible memories. I am under the care of a therapist as I suffer from a very bad case of PTSD. I don’t have much in storage in Miami what apes the things that I want the most. it’s photos of my parents and family, my friends and those who are no longer with us. The things that make memories are in Miami. I only have a picture of my mom when she was 30 that I found from an identification card that she had when she came here from France and I have no pictures of my dad at all let alone any friends. so if you can help I wouldn’t truly appreciate it As I am trying to rebuild my life one brick at a time. thank you to all of those who are so generously contributed money and I thank you so much for taking the time to read my story. Be well my friends, Alain Click here to donate , and thank you so much
