My meanderings about politics, space exploration, cars, cats, tech things and whatever else strikes my fancy. To the current occupant of the White House, we will not be taken into war on anyone's leash.
On November 11th 2017 I deactivated my Facebook account. So here I am, seven months later and 55 pounds lighter.
Sure, there is some inconveniences not to have Facebook but I truly believe that they do not outweigh the infringement upon our privacy and upon the way we think that Facebook is trying to achieve. Deactivating your account is made very difficult by Facebook and the procedure takes about 45 minutes but at the end of the day I don’t miss a single moment of the social media platform.
The way I look at this is very simple. If I go to a restaurant and I get food poisoning I don’t go back to that restaurant until I know that they have changed their methods and have remove the staff that cause this from happening in the first place. We need to vote with our Facebook accounts right now. Deactivating your Facebook account which is what Facebook calls deleting it is the only way that Facebook will change their ways.
Yesterday Mark Zuckerberg went and put out a statement on Facebook and then did an interview on CNN. In both cases he never explained how he’s going to fix the problem. Sure, he said that Facebook should be regulated, but he knows how much money Facebook gives to Congress and how much sway they have and how this regulation will be put into effect. They know the regulations will be toothless. We must deactivate our accounts and then when and only when Facebook makes the necessary changes should we go back. I deactivated my account in November and to be honest everyone I need to be in contact with has remained in contact with me. Is it hard? Yes! But marching in Selma was very very hard and very very dangerous so I don’t feel like some sort of martyr at this juncture compared to those brave people. Let’s grow up and show Facebook who’s the Boss.
I deactivated my Facebook account in November of 2017. It was not easy. When I first started my blog, Facebook generated 90% of the traffic. Now after years my traffic is generated from the search engines.
On a more personal note, I never used Facebook to remind me of my close friends birthdays. They are in my calendar on my phone and backed up to the clouds. My account had over 1,500 friends and honestly I knew maybe three hundred of them. And of those 300 I would call 30 my friends. Facebook has very cleverly changed what are understanding of friends had been through the centuries. I have read article upon article about how Facebook uses and did this very much by Design our need to be liked. So each time somebody gets a like it sends endorphins into their brain and they get just a little more hooked. I like myself, maybe that’s narcissistic but I don’t think so. I truly believe you need to like yourself before you can know how to like others.
And as far as far definition of what a friend is here goes. When I was a little kid my dad told me a story that his dad told them and that he told me his dad had been told by his dad and that it went down Generations. A boy lives on a small village. He is asked about his father when he reaches his teens how many friends does he had. The boy responds I have so many I can’t count them. He asked his father how he had so few friends. His father responded friends are not just people you know but people who actually care deeply about you. He told his son to go and kill a lamb, yes I hate this part but it is somewhat biblical, and put it into a burlap bag. Go to your friends all of those friends that you said you had and tell them you have just killed a man and can they help you. The ones who don’t slam the door on your face are your friends. I’m not telling you that they’re going to go and help you with your crime by hiding the fact that you did it but rather help you through this horrible thing you had done. That’s what a friend is.
Can we really truly say that all of those people that’s what we now have as so-called friends on Facebook who do that for us, I don’t have to think about this my answer is no.
So if you want to follow what I did there are some simple steps. Find out which of your friends birthdays are important to you and put them in your calendar. Make sure you have all of those friends contact information. Then go to the Facebook help area and ask how to deactivate your account. Depending on your platform and the vice they will be different. They will try to tug at your heartstrings at this point. Don’t let them. And then they will ask why you’re doing this. And this is important because there are 15 reasons but the important one you should check is other. And explain in your own words how upset you are at them for having allowed another country to meddle in other countries elections. They have a responsibility to their 2 billion users and they are failing miserably at it. Congressional leaders last week came out of hearings with Facebook and in a bipartisan scream that’s Facebook transparency and gave them ways of fixing what Facebook does. I have a simple way to stop at least some of what Russian does. Don’t accept rubles for political ads in another country. I don’t think that’s takes a rocket scientist to figure out. And I think Russia has a few rocket scientist on hand. And yes, Russia will find ways around this but that’s what they have something called algorithms add Facebook to circumvent.
Facebook will never change unless we force them to. I have a feeling that 2016 once a dress rehearsal for how Mark Zuckerberg plans to become president and either 2020 or 2024 depending on the political winds. That might seem harsh but think about it. You don’t see Google doing what Facebook did. First Google is a search engine and yes they have a duty to remove news that is false and opinions that are inappropriate but that’s not what Facebook is. Twitter gets literally hundreds of millions of tweets each day and again that’s not what Facebook does. I am not saying that Google and Twitter are without blame but to me in comparison with what Facebook did it’s something that they have announced they will fix and I believe them. And also neither Twitter on Google has a name like Mark Zuckerberg that everyone knows as their founders. Yes some people know who started Google and Twitter but it’s not as universal as Mark Zuckerberg.
When I said I lost 45 lb it was not clickbait. Ask my friends and neighbors and they will tell you I am transformed. Nothing magical, I had all this time on my hands so I started walking around beautiful downtown Los Angeles. I have a great gym in the building so I started going to the gym still had lots of time. Well then I started noticing that I was eating crappy food and I started watching what I was eating and I’ve gone from a size 38 waist to a size 32 and from an extra large shirt to a medium men. I went from 224 lb to 177 and I am 6ft 2. I’m not promising you all will lose weight but I’m sure you’ll find some great things to do with the time that you have been wasting on Facebook.
I deleted my Facebook account on November 11th. At that point I weighed 224 lb. So here I am 3 months later and I weigh 183 lb. I can’t tell you that deleting your Facebook account is going to make you dump weight like I did,
But it will make you feel better about yourself. You won’t be part of a giant social experiment. You won’t be having arguments with strangers. You’ll have more time to talk to your friends. You’ll have more time to spend with your family. You’ll have more time to be with yourself.
I applied Jim Carrey and I hope and many others follow in his footsteps. If I hear another Facebook executive claim that did not know that Russia was influencing the 2016 election I will throw up in their mouths. They accepted the advertising against Hillary Clinton in Rubles, the Russian currency. You would think that if somebody painted you in Frank’s you would know that they were French. So this is all hypocritical on Facebook’s part and they need to be punished and the only way we can do it is by deactivating our accounts and if you own their stock selling it.
